This is absolutely accurate. The NRA was started by Union officers after the Civil War because they were very upset about the apparent low level of marksmanship during that war (they had not read Lt. Col. Dave Grossman’s book “On Killing” and didn’t know that the more likely cause was human nature – most can’t deliberately kill another person even to save their own life).
Personally I have never seen the NRA itself make this claim, although I have seen some uninformed people do so.
